Detail of embroidered flowersLunch tote, hand-embroidered
by Ursula K. Le Guin

Take Ursula to lunch. She has embroidered a canvas lunch bag with flowers and foliage, and stitched a dedication and signature on the back. "You can only have lunch once," she says helpfully, "because it isn't washable." (So maybe you'll want to use it as a stuff bag instead.) Inside, you'll find a hand-drawn label from "Ethniklutz Industries," with a fabric care advisory in Ursula's own hand.

A proponent of the Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, Ursula holds that "the natural, proper, fitting shape of the novel might be that of a sack… A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings." If you carry your words in a lunch bag, does this mean you are prepared to eat them?
